AUDIO - The CCT Blues selection meeting

Two of rugby league’s greatest minds have come together to pick the players they believe should be in NSW’s State of Origin team for Game I.

Steve Roach and Darryl Brohman have leapt into the debate over the Blues’ Origin lineup, putting on their own selection meeting to come up with their best NSW side.

The two Continuous Call Team big guns, in the guise of actual selectors Bob McCarthy (Roach) and Geoff Gerard (Brohman), had their selection meeting on air on Sunday afternoon, with fellow CCT member Andrew Moore taking on the role of chairman Colin Love and having the deciding vote on selections.

The trio considered a surprise selection of Hazem El Masri before deciding on Jarryd Hayne and Anthony Quinn on the wings, with Jamie Lyon’s defensive prowess earning him a start in the centres.

Greg Bird got the nod at five-eighth, with Knights fullback Kurt Gidley being given the halfback role.

Brent Kite and Brett White are the starting props, with Danny Buderus captaining the side at hooker. Ryan Hoffman, Anthony Laffranchi and Paul Gallen form a formidable back row.

Brett Finch got the nod over Jarrod Mullen on the bench (against the wishes of the Big Maan), alongside forwards Ben Cross, Anthony Tupou and Willie Mason.

Here’s the team in full:
1.    Brett Stewart
2.    Jarryd Hayne
3.    Mark Gasnier
4.    Jamie Lyon
5.    Anthony Quinn
6.    Greg Bird
7.    Kurt Gidley
8.    Brent Kite
9.    Danny Burderus
10.    Brett White
11.    Ryan Hoffman
12.    Anthony Laffranchi
13.    Paul Gallen

14.    Ben Cross
15.    Anthony Tupou
16.    Brett Finch
17.    Willie Mason

What do you think of the team?

4/05/2008 8:58:56 AM Thats a solid team. Except Brett Finch should be halfback. I mean Matt
Orford hit the nail on the head the other week when people were saying Robbie Farah should be halfback when he's a regular HOOKER. I mean geese its an insult to every halfback in the comp to put a player in the halfback position who doesnt play halfback for his club. I mean im not doubting Gidley, but Finch has to get the position. He's plaing halfback at club level and is playing some good footy. Posted by: Anthony Tassone, Hornsby, Australia Reply

5/05/2008 1:16:09 PM mitchell pearce should get a bench spot hes not too young go back to freddys days, or ben ikins origin debut theres plenty of history in origin.what about luke lewis hes playing great footy.what about gidley on the wing, hayne has had two decent games this season not really earning a spot in origin. is this not supposed to be the best of the sydney boys not sentimental favourites we want to SMASH QUEENSLAND!! 6/05/2008 4:52:54 AM Hi wat a horrible line up. bieng a blues supporter im pretty disgusted. 4 starterz mat cooper has probably been the best nsw backrower in the last few years. in da dead rubba last year he absolutely tore the maroons apart. greg bird is a tough player but definitely not 5/8. think bout it. fittler.....barrett......BIRD!!
nah man. it just doesnt make sense. kurt gidley will be wasted at halfback. SERIOUSLY! half is da bloody main position and 2 hav a part timer there is rubbish. gidley bench..... Posted by: Shuaib Ali, BrisVegas, Australia Reply

6/05/2008 4:59:37 AM ..... jarrod mullen halfback. hez a beta than last year and is a natural playmaker with n excellent kicking game. finch sux under pressure. 5/8 should eitha b anasta or hornby. i mean seriusly. u can just c hornby slotting in 5/8 position. he bloody deserves it!

GO DA MIGHTY BLUEZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Posted by: Shuaib Ali, BrisVegas, Australia Reply

6/05/2008 10:50:50 AM I know that NSW is a little light on for halves this year as they were last year. But I do not agree with selecting a player out of position just to put him in the team. Gidley has had an awesome season...at FULLBACK not HALFBACK! If Stewart is to be fullback, and deservedly so, then unfortunately Gidley is on the bench. What about Peter Wallace (broncos Halfback) who has proven himself with the Broncos and knows Lockyer and the Qld backs play. Give him a shot..not gidley!
