After 31 years, I'm not ready to quit yet: Folkes

Steve Folkes most likely has just nine weeks left with the Bulldogs. But after 31 years with the club he's not about to throw in the towel, despite a nightmare season.

The veteran coach says he has unfinished business this season he won't be making an early departure to let incoming coach Kevin Moore take the reins.

Folkes, known as a straight shooter, has laid bare the issues that both he and the team face as they look for redemption heading into the final stretch of the season.

"It's been tough and, sure, you doubt yourself when you're not winning," he told News Ltd. "But I know I am still the right person for this job this season and I am as committed to the job as ever.

"I have already given Kevin wider responsibility. And the respect between the players and me . . . I would like to think me hasn't changed.

"I never anticipated we'd be running next to last, that's hurting me, that's hurting everyone here. It's not how I intended to finish up here.

"You sometimes get the impression the fans think we're not doing our best. That is something I have always done as a player and a coach and will continue to do, and so are the players. And I'd like to think the club has always come first.

"It's not an excuse but I challenge any team to have six to 12 first-graders out since round five, including three front-rowers, and perform anywhere near capabilities. Melbourne haven't won a game without nine to 10 Origin players, the Roosters had four out and Manly beat them 42-0.

"We've had that sort of absentee list most of the season. Whether they are Origin players or not, it takes a big toll on your continuity and combinations.

"We thought at the start of the season if we could keep close to our top side on the paddock most weeks we could sneak into the eight, maybe better.

"But that hasn't happened.

"We know we have to do better, and are capable of doing better, but you have to be realistic."

I am still the right person for this job this season and I am as committed to the job as ever. Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes
