Wife Carrying World Champs: Aussies in the money

Peter Cassidy | rugbyleaguelive.com | 01/07/08 | 0

It's an event close to our hearts, but the Wife Carrying World Championships could soon be an event close to our wallets with an Australian betting agency opening a book on the bizarre sport.

Two couples will carry the flag for Australia when the Championships kick-off on July 5 in the Wife Carrying 'capital' of Finland, with Lasseters Sportsbook installing Newcastle pair Jason Doyle and Lyneece Garlandin the third line of betting at $8.00.

Tasmanian couple Ivo and Emma Vincour are quoted at $21.00 to win the prestigious title.

"This competition has been dominated by the Uusorg family who have won seven of the past eight titles," says Lasseters’ Gerard Daffy, having taken bets on the event for several years.

"Madis and Margo Uusorg have made this competition their own over the past decade after they patented the popular technique, which is now commonly known as the Estonian carry."

The Continuous Call Team will keep you up to speed with comprehensive Wife Carrying World Championships coverage throughout the weekend.
